At Okano’s Eco-Arts Salon, in addition to a discussion about her art practice, community members will have the opportunity to use natural materials she has gathered from the public park side and the Classical Garden as alternative artist materials. The art participants create, such as small floating boats made out of leaves to hold tea lights, will be included in the Winter Solstice Celebration at the gardens this year.

Haruko Okano is a professional, interdisciplinary, process based artist with over 30 years experience. She has been part of the environmental art movement in Canada since 1995. Many of her projects include partnering with local community, involving them in the gathering of materials or adding their personal touches to installations such as Commentree mounted for the Richmond Art Gallery and the Touchstone Museum of Art and History, Nelson (2007). Her work includes elements from her Japanese ancestry, and holistic traditions common to many cultures in the world of hunter and gatherers. She also is a workshop facilitator and mentor in the arts.
